Tips to Avoid Tax Fraud

Posted 2/14/2019 by Wood County Sheriff's Investigators
It's tax season and with that bring the annual tax scams. Getting your returns filed early is the surest way to avoid having a fraudulent return filed in your name. And please remember that the IRS DOES NOT do any of the following:

1. Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes.

2. Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

3. Demand payment without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

When you file your taxes if you find you've been victimized contact your local law enforcement agency and they can take a report and assist you in filing IRS Form 14039 so that you may file your return. The following links have helpful information to help victims.
